The rumour machine is in full swing and the word on the street is that Facebook and Instagram may be expecting a baby. The behemoth that is Meta recently confirmed plans to “explore a standalone decentralised social network for sharing text updates”. Their idea is to create a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates”.
The plan is for the new Meta application, which has the somewhat drab codename P92, to allow users of FB and Instagram to login using their existing credentials. Make no mistake. This isn’t just another add-on similar to the “Notes” feature added to Instagram last year. This is a full blown, fully featured Twitter alternative and it’s one that many celebs and many users generally will welcome with open arms.
There is even talk of a decentralised architecture to allow users to create servers and communities with their own rules along the lines of Reddit. It could even be possible for third party developers to create plugins and add-ons for the app.
So when will it all happen? Well, sadly there’s no official release date yet. But it does look likely that it will come to pass. Especially as Meta executives have already allegedly been briefing news outlets such as the BBC. They only tend to do that when they are serious. There’s also a rumour that Oprah Winfrey, who has more than 42 million followers on Twitter, and the Dalai Lama, who has nearly 19 million, could be future P92 users.
